Samina Akbar is currently an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana (USA ) which she joined in 2013. She completed her Ph.D. in Microbiology at University of California Davis (USA) in 1997 and did postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School (USA) and at University of British Columbia, Center for Disease Control (Canada). She is also a member of the American Society for Microbiology since 1990. At Marian university, she delivers lectures on infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites to first- and second-year medical students. Her research projects focus on studying multiple antibiotic resistance in bacteria from different sources including humans, animals, and the natural environment. Currently, her lab is focusing on the isolation and characterization of multiple drug resistant bacteria from fresh bodies of water in greater Indianapolis area. The goal is that the results from this research will help promote regulatory changes in the state of Indiana on how waste from healthcare settings and agriculture is dumped into waterways.
